Why do we hide when we’ve done something wrong?

It’s an instinct that seems to come naturally to us. When we’re ashamed of something we’ve done, the last thing we want is for someone to see us.

In Genesis 3, Adam and Eve experience this for the first time. Their eyes are opened, just as the serpent promised. But instead of finding the wisdom and freedom they expected, they find themselves overwhelmed by shame.

“Helper” is one of the most misunderstood words in Genesis 2. But the Hebrew word doesn’t describe someone lesser or secondary. It often describes the help God gives when people cannot rescue themselves. The woman is not an assistant standing behind the man. She is the one who answers what God says is “not good,” a partner who shares humanity’s calling. And the story points beyond Eden to Jesus, God’s gracious gift to a fractured humanity, the true Helper who gives us the life and communion we cannot create for ourselves.

Genesis 2 seems to repeat itself. God places the man in the garden, and then just a few verses later, we’re told He does it again.

But the repetition is intentional. The second telling adds details that reveal a pattern running from Eden through the rest of the Bible, and it changes the way we understand humanity’s purpose in God’s presence.

Genesis 2 suddenly pauses to tell us about a river flowing out of Eden. At first, it feels like a strange detail. But that river becomes one of the Bible’s great images of God’s life flowing outward into the world.

In this episode, we follow that river from Eden to Ezekiel, from Jesus to the cross, and finally to Revelation. Along the way, we discover something about God’s heart and our calling: His life was never meant to stop with us.

You were never meant to be a reservoir. You were created to be a river.

Genesis 2 gives us one of the Bible’s most intimate pictures of what it means to be human. We are dust, fragile and dependent, yet filled with the breath of God and made to live in His presence. And in Jesus, God begins the work of bringing humanity home.
